How it works

Every player starts level. Beating a strong pair moves your rating more than beating a weak one, and losing to a weak pair costs more than losing to a strong one — the same idea as a chess rating, averaged across the two players on each side of the net.

It is not the official ranking and it is not trying to be. FIP points reward entering tournaments and going deep in them; this rewards beating good players, whenever and wherever. Where the two disagree, they are usually disagreeing about someone who plays rarely but plays well, or often but against weaker fields.

The top 100 by rating, and sorting reorders those hundred rather than searching the whole archive. Players with fewer than five matches are left out entirely — a rating built on two results says more about the draw than the player.
